Georgia's Law on Legitimization

Many people are surprised to discover that the father of child born out-of-wedlock in the state of Georgia has absolutely no legal or physical custody rights to the child, even if his name appears on the child's birth certificate. Thus, in the event the mother chooses to deny visitation with the child or consent to the adoption of the child, the biological father would have no legal standing to challenge those actions. While this rule of law is quite harsh, there are ways to secure legal rights to the child. A biological father can legitimize the relationship by way of petition in a court of law, or by marrying the child's biological mother.

The Law Office of Talia J. Nurse, LLC can assist you in legitimizing your relationship with your child. Call 404.736.9933 to schedule your consultation today.
